Narrative function

Leave through a thing. Endings, a mind opening onto a city, a room that becomes a street by way of a window, a pupil, a barred frame: absence can be the dramatic center.

The effect is the viewpoint abandoning the person, not merely passing an obstacle. A zoom out that never enters matter is not this shot.

The object must occupy the frame as a tunnel.

How it works

Stage room, object, and exterior as one spatial problem. Removable barrier, support transfer, or composite.

Choreograph exterior action and offscreen sound to carry the event if the camera looks away. Prompt: Through-object-out from [Subject], the camera exiting via an object into a wider world, the interior becoming exterior.

When to use it

Use it to leave a person through a thing into a larger space. Do not use a plain pull-out and claim a portal.

Begin inside a quiet hotel room with a traveler seated near the edge of frame. Slowly approach a barred window, pass beyond it without visible interruption, drift into the courtyard, then turn to look back at the room. What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a zoom out or a crane-up. The tell: the world enlarges but no object ever fills the frame as a passage.
