Anamorphic Flare

Narrative function

Night lamps and headlights write a bar across the frame because the front optic stretches one axis. The streak is cyan, blue, or magenta depending on coatings, and it stays level with the squeezed world.

Oval highlights in the background confirm the same glass. Use it when the night should be written on the taking lens: wet streets, neon, a car coming toward camera.

The streak is evidence of scope optics, not of brightness alone. It is the wrong tool in spherical coverage, or when you want a circular ghost of the iris.

If the bokeh is round and the streak is a random rainbow, you have mixed two lens families.

How it works

Shoot anamorphic (typically 2x squeeze). Put a hard point source in or near frame: headlight, practical, sun.

Keep the cylindrical axis consistent so streaks stay horizontal. Coatings and the front element decide color and length.

Stop down and ovals become more polygonal. In a prompt, say horizontal anamorphic streak, name the hue, and demand oval bokeh, not round discs.

When to use it

A car cresting a wet overpass at night, headlights drawing cyan bars through a figure in a raincoat. Do not add horizontal streaks to a spherical 50mm close-up with round bokeh.

Compared with similar shots

Lens Flare covers ghosts, veiling, and spherical scatter. Anamorphic flare is the horizontal bar from cylindrical glass.

Anamorphic is the lens format itself: squeeze, oval bokeh, and the flare are consequences. Bokeh is the out-of-focus disc shape.

Oval discs support the claim. Round discs contradict it.

Abrams films push the horizontal streak until it becomes a signature. Super 8 (2011) uses the same family of bars as period scope language.
