Narrative function

The audience is trespassing. That is the beat.

A couple through blinds, a conversation across a square, a tent at night: we occupy a hiding place. The subject does not present.

They are caught, or they would be if they turned. It is the wrong tool for granted intimacy.

A close-up the character knows about is not voyeur. An over-the-shoulder in a dialogue scene is coverage, even if a shoulder dirties the edge.

Offscreen sound often rides with this view (a whistle, a courtyard, a tent wall) because the hide limits what we can see. The technique itself is the concealed camera, not the soundtrack.

How it works

Put a real occluder between lens and subject and stand where a watcher could stand. Keep enough aperture to melt the hide (leaves, fabric, a slit) while holding the distant face.

A longer lens is the usual cheat for distance. Do not center the peephole like a pretty wreath unless the hide is a designed iris.

Prompt: Voyeur frame of [Subject], watching from concealment, dirty edges, a view we should not have.

When to use it

Use it when watching is transgression: affairs, surveillance, a neighbor, a hunter. Do not slap dirty leaves on a scene the character is performing for us.

Compared with similar shots

Dirty Frame is the edge grammar voyeur often uses. Voyeur is the ethical position: concealment.

You can dirty a party from inside the crowd without hiding. Over-the-Shoulder Coverage is dialogue coverage with a known listener in the foreground.

Frame within Frame may be a window we are invited to look through. Windows stacks many lives.

Voyeur picks one hide. Point of View claims we are the character.

Voyeur often claims we are not supposed to be anyone.

In film

Rear Window makes looking across a courtyard the plot. The Conversation records and watches until privacy is a myth.

Cache (Hidden) holds distant, unauthorized views until the camera itself is an aggressor. M and The Blair Witch Project let presence arrive from beyond the visible, often as sound around a limited hide.

Say through blinds, from behind a car, through leaves, a long lens across a courtyard. Keep the subject unaware.

Occupy the edges with the hide.

Locked shot inside a dim railway waiting room. An unseen suitcase rolls across the platform outside; its wheels move audibly from left to right, pause, then return. The lone passenger reacts without the camera revealing the source. Design spatially coherent audio separately, with no visible creature or arbitrary musical sting.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a pretty Dirty Frame the subject could see, or an Over-the-Shoulder Coverage from a scene partner. The tell is eye contact with lens, or a hide that is only a vignette.

The fix is a real occluder, a plausible hiding place, and a subject who does not present.
