Time-Lapse

Narrative function

Use it to reveal a pattern no one can stand still long enough to see. Weather, construction, traffic, a plant, a city emptying and filling.

People often stop being protagonists and become a system. The camera is usually locked so the only motion is time.

It is the wrong tool for a comic undercrank of a performance, or for a still hero in a racing crowd (that is a different recipe). If the camera must walk the street while hours collapse, you wanted a hyperlapse.

Do not call a fast crowd under a stuck sun a full day-to-night lapse.

How it works

Plan interval, total duration, exposure, and stability. A locked head is the default.

For day-to-night, ramp exposure so windows light as the sky dies. The sun and shadows must travel if the claim is a full day.

Prompt: Time-lapse of [Subject] or the world around them, hours in seconds, shadows sweeping, crowds as smoke.

When to use it

Use it to show weather, construction, or a night becoming morning from a stable viewpoint. Do not use it to make an actor's performance merely faster.

Compared with similar shots

Time-lapse is not Fast Motion, which accelerates a continuous take. Hyperlapse adds significant camera travel through space on top of the interval.

Koyaanisqatsi turns traffic, crowds, and urban cycles into large-scale patterns. Baraka organizes cities and ritual through altered temporal scales.

Both are grammar for interval sampling, not frames to copy.

Prompt it

Name the interval collapse and what must move. Still: matched architecture at one implied phase, or a composite of sun angles only if you label it a study.

Video: Time-lapse around [Subject], light and crowds moving at accelerated speed while the camera stays or moves slowly. Shadows must travel.

Buildings stay solid.

Locked high view of a public square from early morning to night, compressed into ten seconds. Shadows move continuously, crowds form and dissolve, windows light up gradually. Stable buildings and weather logic, no morphing architecture. Generate controlled day-phase keyframes and assemble a time-lapse progression.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is Fast Motion. The tell is smeared pedestrians under a sun that never moves, or architecture that morphs.

Fix: write hours in seconds, a stable camera, and continuous shadow travel. If only people race, you have not shown a day.
