Gobo Lighting

Narrative function

Venetian blinds, bars, branches cut as a design, a fan, a grille: the character wears the architecture. Noir and political interiors use it so a man is already in a cage before anyone speaks.

It is the wrong tool for invisible naturalism, or for random leaf scatter you do not want to look designed. If the pattern is irregular canopy, prefer dappled light.

Gobos need a hard enough source to stay readable.

How it works

Put a hard, small source through slats, a cut cucoloris, or a metal gobo in a fixture. Distance from pattern to subject sets how sharp the shadows are.

Key side is wherever that lamp sits, often high and off axis. Color is often white moonlight gel or hard tungsten.

When to use it

Use it when the room should write on the person, blinds on a liar, bars on a prisoner. Do not use it as default texture on every close-up.

Compared with similar shots

Dappled light is irregular and natural. Hard light is the quality a gobo needs.

Window light through blinds is a motivated gobo. Split lighting is a half-face cut without a pattern.

Film noir is a genre look that often employs this tool.

In film

The Conformist (Storaro) throws architectural slats and graphic shadows across faces and walls. Classic film noir uses blinds and bars as cages.

The pattern is placed, not accidental leaf scatter.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is dappled leaf scatter or soft wrap that eats the slats. The tell is fuzzy blobs, or no pattern at all.

Fix it by hardening the source and putting a real slat or cucoloris in the beam.
