Psychology is built, not implied. A staircase leans.

A shadow is bigger than the body that casts it, and sometimes the shadow is paint. The face is lit like a mask because the room is already a diagnosis.

It is the wrong tool for a real wet street or a fashion interior. Noir keeps plausible cities and lets Hard Light do the violence.

Giallo bends color, not carpentry. If the walls are square and only the grade is moody, you do not have expressionism.

How it works

Build or paint impossible architecture: converging walls, oversized windows, stairs that refuse the horizon. Light with hard, unfilled sources so shadows are graphic edges, not soft falloff.

Dutch the camera a few degrees as a default, not a sting. Orthochromatic or high-contrast black-and-white, 35mm spherical, theatrical blocking, often locked-off.

Prompt painted shadows, impossible architecture, jagged light, and Caligari psychology as set.

When to use it

Use it when the location must be a mental state, not a real address. Do not use it as a dutch-angle garnish on a square contemporary room.

Compared with similar shots

German Expressionism distorts carpentry. Film Noir distorts with light on real streets.

Dutch Angle is one tilted horizon; expressionism is the whole set. Hard Light is the source quality.

Chiaroscuro is the ratio. You need the bent architecture, not only the contrast.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is Film Noir or a lone Dutch Angle: a wet alley, or a tilted camera in an ordinary room. The tell is square architecture with only contrast added.

Fix: cant the set or the perspective, paint or project graphic shadows, and lock the camera on that geometry.
