Two Color

Narrative function

Posters, fables, a political still: assign the two hues to shadow and light, or to figure and ground, then kill everything else. Spot color can attach to a coat, a person, or a changing state of the world.

Naturalistic skin may break the law unless one hue is the skin. It is the wrong tool as a mild grade, and the wrong tool if random colors leak through motion.

The selection must stay stable. Complexity of extra inks is a leak, not richness.

How it works

Lock off, 35mm to 50mm. Plan wardrobe and walls so only two hues survive, then mask or grade the rest to the pair or to monochrome plus one.

Prompt: Two-color law on [Subject], a pair of hues doing all the drawing, print as cinematography. Name the two hues.

When to use it

A poster, a fable, a political still, a coat that must be the only color. Do not use it as teal-orange blockbuster, and do not let extra hues leak.

Compared with similar shots

Palette is a restricted set that may still hold more than two. Monochrome is one ink.

Two color is a pair, or monochrome plus a spot. If leftovers survive, you wanted palette, or you failed the law.

In film

Schindler's List keeps the red coat as a signal inside monochrome. Pleasantville lets color arrive as a change of state.

Sin City punctuates high-contrast monochrome with selected inks. Law, not a LUT.

Keep the selection stable.

A crowded monochrome railway platform, with only one small yellow suitcase retaining its natural color. Track the suitcase as it changes hands; all other objects stay black and white. Stable object identity, clean edge tracking, no random patches of color.

What usually goes wrong

A teal-orange blockbuster, or random leaks. The tell is a thousand leftovers.
