Step Printing

Narrative function

Use it for longing that cannot move at normal speed: a walk through rain, a pursuit that feels remembered, a figure isolated from a city's rush. The smear belongs inside the frame.

The step belongs between frames. Together they make memory feel unstable without a digital glitch overlay.

It is the wrong tool for a readable impact study, a fight that must stay mechanical, or anxiety that should skip like a damaged mind. Those are slow motion and stutter.

Do not interpolate the cadence away. If the walk becomes silk, you left the technique.

How it works

Shoot or generate a low temporal sample (often well below 24 fps) with enough shutter time for motion blur, then duplicate frames to the delivery rate. Test the cadence.

Keep practical lights saturated and the lonely figure more readable than the crowd. Prompt: Step-printed motion of [Subject], frames duplicated, stuttering lyric delay, long-exposure smear inside each frame.

When to use it

Use it on a rain walk or a night counter where one person should separate from the city's rush. Do not use it when you need clean 120 fps anatomy of a hit.

Compared with similar shots

Step printing is not silk Slow Motion, which samples densely and interpolates smoothly. It is not Stutter / Stop-Stutter, which drops or repeats frames as anxious rhythm without requiring long-exposure smear.

Motion Blur can exist at normal cadence. Stop Motion builds poses by hand between exposures rather than reprinting live action.

Chungking Express gives crowded street movement a blurred, stuttering temporal texture. Fallen Angels uses irregular urban motion and smear as a lonely gait.

In the Mood for Love is often remembered as slow romance. Much of that delay is step-printed texture rather than overcranked silk.

Prompt it

Ask for duplicated frames and in-frame smear, not 120 fps. Still: a readable figure with strongly smeared passersby, long-exposure street texture.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is Slow Motion. The tell is clean high-frame-rate motion with no step and no smear, or a datamosh overlay.

Fix: specify low-rate capture, long shutter, duplicated frames, and a cadence you can count.
