Rim Light
Rim lighting is a narrow edge of light, usually from a flagged backlight, that separates a subject from the background without opening the face. The highlight sits on brim, hair, and coat; flesh stays mostly dark.
Narrative function
The shot becomes a graphic: a profile or three-quarter figure drawn with a thread of exposure. You keep just enough flesh to know it is a person, not a paper doll.
Crime, spy, and night-city work use it so a body reads against wet asphalt or a black wall. It is the wrong tool for a dialogue close-up that needs both eyes.

How it works
