Layered Depth

Narrative function

Social geometry becomes visible at once. Adults sign a boy's future in a near room while the boy plays in a distant window.

A phone booth and a piano split a bar. Who owns space is a matter of which plane can still act.

It is the wrong tool when only one plane has story. Three pretty layers of wallpaper are not layered depth.

If you cannot imagine walking from the near object to the far door, the diagram is a collage. Do not assume every deep stage must be uniformly sharp.

You can hold two actions and still rack. The arrangement is the composition.

The iris is the optics.

How it works

Place meaningful bodies or objects on separate planes with readable gaps. Keep sightlines and entrances clear.

Choose a wider lens and more distance if you want natural deep space. Stop down (and add light) if several planes must be sharp.

A split diopter is a different cheat. Prompt: Three-plane composition around [Subject], foreground, mid, and deep background all carrying information, deep staging.

When to use it

Use it when two relationships must be true in one hold: a deal and a child, a dance and a call, a guard and a prisoner. Do not stack bric-a-brac in three zones and call it staging.

Compared with similar shots

Deep Focus is the optical result of small aperture and sufficient light, or a digital imitation. Layered depth can exist with selective focus.

Foreground Interest only guarantees a near layer. Layered depth requires the far planes to work.

Tableau may be deep or flat, but it privileges a fixed arrangement over cutting. One-Point Perspective can organize the walkable space as a tunnel.

Citizen Kane stages Kane's future indoors while the boy plays outside the window, planes in one sentence. The Best Years of Our Lives splits a bar between piano and telephone booth so attention has to choose.

The Conformist uses fascist architecture as deep, walkable politics. Grammar of staging, not a focus preset.

Prompt it

Assign jobs to planes. Three-plane composition around [Subject], foreground, mid, and deep background all carrying information, deep staging.

Name what happens near, middle, and far. Say whether all planes are sharp or which one holds focus.

Do not write 3D as a slogan.

A landlord signs a document in the near foreground while, through an open doorway, a family quietly packs in the distant room. Hold both actions in one wide composition. The foreground gesture must not obscure the family. No cut or explanatory insert.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is Deep Focus wallpaper. The tell is everything sharp and only one action.

The fix is to put a second story on another plane, or to admit you wanted a single-plane portrait and simplify.
