Silhouette

Narrative function

Identity is less important than emblem: a rider on a ridge, a bicycle against a moon, a man in a doorway. The audience recognizes an action from outline alone.

If two shapes merge, the sentence is lost. It is the wrong tool when a line of dialogue needs a mouth, or when you still want pores and color in the coat.

A little rim is not a silhouette. If you can name the eye color, you overexposed the figure.

How it works

Expose for the bright ground (sky, doorway, fire, sun disk). Keep the key off the subject, or far below the background.

Backlight may exist as a sky, not as a facial key. Separate limbs, hats, and props so the outline parses.

Hardness of the background source can be hard sun or a bright overcast; the subject is simply underexposed. Prompt: Silhouette of [Subject] as a dark shape against a bright ground, surface detail gone, mythic outline only.

When to use it

Use it when identity matters less than shape, a departure through a door, a figure against dusk. Do not use it if the action cannot be read from the outline.

Compared with similar shots

Backlight can create a silhouette if you expose for it, or a rim if you hold the face a little. Rim light keeps a thread of flesh highlight; silhouette usually does not.

Cameo lighting is the inverse: a lit figure on a black ground. Low-key lighting still models something in the pool.

In film

T. the Extra-Terrestrial puts bicycle and riders in silhouette across the moon.

The Searchers isolates a figure against a bright doorway and landscape. Lawrence of Arabia and Skyfall use desert and sun as the bright field that turns bodies into emblems.

Prompt it

Expose the ground, starve the body. " Name a readable outline (limbs separated).

Forbid facial detail and neon rims.

A parent and child carry a small telescope up a ridge at dusk, rendered as clean dark silhouettes against a luminous pale sky. Keep their limbs and the telescope distinct. Locked wide view, gentle wind, no visible facial detail or artificial rim halo.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a rim portrait or a muddy underexposure on a dark ground. The tell is visible eyes, or a black figure on a black field.

Fix it by brightening the background, killing keys on the body, and separating the limbs.
