Duplication

A duplicate subject effect puts the same performer in a frame more than once as solid bodies: twins, a self across a table, copies in one room. It is usually a split matte, motion control, or a locked-camera composite, not a translucent double exposure.

Duplication frames over time

Narrative function

One person is not a single self. Two performances share a kitchen.

They argue, pass a look, fail to occupy the same chair. Contact shadows, eyelines, and any exchanged object are the hard problems.

Two similar-looking people are not automatically this effect. Use it when identity splits in space: twins, a writer and his brother, a man meeting himself.

The encounter should feel physically ordinary. It is the wrong tool when the second self is a ghost (double exposure), when the frame is simply divided (split-screen as the visible device), or when one body melts into another (morph).

If they cannot sit in depth and occlude, you have the wrong cousin.

How it works

Lock the camera or repeat the move with motion control. Record a clean plate.

Shoot each performance with matched light. Use a split matte where bodies stay apart, or tracked masks where they overlap.

Plan contact and handed objects as separate shots or as later help. Prompt: the same figure twice in one frame, solid bodies, matched lighting, not a ghost overlay, not a visible split line unless you want split-screen.

When to use it

Two versions of one woman across a kitchen table, distinct posture and clothing, shared shadows, locked camera. Do not stack them as translucent densities, and do not leave a vertical join down the table.

Compared with similar shots

Double Exposure is additive overlay. Ghosts, not two sitters.

Split Screen shows two pictures with a designed border, which can be how duplication is done if the join is visible. Seamless duplication hides the join.

Morph turns one form into another over time. Duplication keeps both.

In film

The Parent Trap seats one performer as both twins in shared compositions. Adaptation puts Charlie and Donald in the same scenes.

Enemy multiplies a man as encounter. The Social Network uses similar motion-control doubling for the Winklevoss pair.

Prompt it

Two solid performances, one space. Example: Duplication of [Subject], the same figure twice in one frame, twins of identity, solid bodies with matched light and contact shadows, not a double-exposure ghost, not a visible split-screen line.

What usually goes wrong

Wrong cousin: double exposure, split-screen with a hard line, or two lookalikes who are not the same face. Tell: translucent stack, a seam down the set, mismatched grain or key, hovering hands.

Fix: locked or motion-controlled plates, identical identity, shared shadows, planned occlusion.

Questions

What is duplication in film?

The same performer appearing more than once in a shot as solid bodies, usually via split mattes or motion control. It is a spatial double, not a ghost overlay.

Duplication vs double exposure

Double exposure stacks densities so both images show through. Duplication composites two performances so each body can occlude, sit, and cast shadow.

When should I use duplication?

When one person must meet themselves as a physical other. Do not use it for a memory ghost or for a morph from one face into another.

How do I prompt duplication for AI image or video?

Ask for the same face twice, distinct poses, matched lighting, contact shadows, locked camera. Forbid translucent overlay and a visible split line unless split-screen is the point.

Melies is the AI filmmaking workspace. This Duplication opens with the optical prompt loaded, so the effect has a physical cause in the frame.
