Narrative function

A single warm source, a face turning into light, the rest of the room falling away: the audience reads character as a matter of what remains visible. Tenebrism is the hard end of this, where everything beyond arm's reach is black.

Crime, period night, and religious doubt all use the same physics. It is the wrong tool for a wide that must describe architecture, or for comedy that needs a second face in the shadows.

Underexposing an even room is not chiaroscuro. You have to place a key and let falloff do the cutting.

How it works

Place one motivated key (window, lamp, candle), reduce fill, and flag spill. The key is often warm, slightly high, and small enough to fall off fast.

Hardness can be moderately hard so planes of the face turn quickly. Keep enough separation that eyes and hands in the pool stay legible.

When to use it

Use it when light is moral and darkness hides or judges, for example a confession across a desk lamp. Do not use it as a global grade on a daylight street.

Compared with similar shots

Low-key lighting is the broader contrast strategy; chiaroscuro insists on modeled volume, not just a dark frame. Rembrandt lighting is a specific cheek-triangle pattern that often lives inside chiaroscuro.

Cameo lighting isolates against void and may flatten the world to a stage cutout. Hard light helps the cut but is not required if falloff is steep.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is muddy underexposure. The tell is no key direction and featureless blacks.

Fix it by placing one warm source, flagging bounce, and exposing the lit planes.
