Narrative function

Someone in the foreground owns the frame, then the helix turns and a face in the room takes over. No cut.

The blur itself is the sentence. Use it when who matters changes while geography stays.

It is the wrong tool if both planes must stay readable at once, or if you only need a static shallow portrait. If nothing is sharp at either end, you did not shift focus.

How it works

Mark two distances. Keep depth of field shallow enough that only one plane is crisp, often a 50mm to 85mm near T2.

A follow-focus or remote motor walks the helical from A to B. The camera is usually locked or slow so the pull is the only event.

Lens breathing may thicken the image slightly as glass moves. Prompt a focal shift: the plane of sharpness traveling from one fact to another.

For video, pull from a foreground object onto the subject, or the reverse.

When to use it

Use it for the beat when a glass, a gun, or a listener in the foreground yields to the person who must answer. Do not use it as decoration on a single face with no second plane.

Compared with similar shots

Rack Focus is the standard two-mark transfer, often about two seconds, composition held. Focal shift is the traveling plane as the event, including a slow rack, a snap rack, or several racks in a row.

Shallow Focus is a state: one plane already sharp. A shift is the move between states.

The Graduate organizes attention between Benjamin and the figures around him by selective focus. There Will Be Blood uses the same grammar in hard interiors: who is true in the room changes without a cut.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a cut, or a morph of detail during the pull. The tell is both planes sharp, or the face warping as focus moves.

The fix is two marked distances, shallow field, and a clean travel of the plane.
