Whip Tilt

Narrative function

Vertical shock instead of a horizontal whip. A body hits the floor, a face is found in a tree, a sign slams down from sky.

The middle of the move should be unreadable on purpose. It is the wrong tool for a slow reveal of a tower, and the wrong tool if you needed the camera to fall with a body.

Blurred pitch is not a crane collapse.

How it works

Rotate on the horizontal axis past blur, then hard-stop on a composed frame. Match blur if you cut inside it.

Keep the tripod planted so you do not add a drop. Prompt a violent vertical whip tilt, the frame ripping up or down with motion blur, then a hard stop.

When to use it

Use it for vertical shock instead of a horizontal whip. Concrete beat: from a screaming mouth down onto the weapon that caused it.

Do not use it to measure a building.

Compared with similar shots

A Whip Pan blurs on yaw. A Tilt Up or Tilt Down stays readable on the same axis.

A Crash Zoom In is optical, not a head rotation. Whip tilt is pitch speed, then a stop.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a Whip Pan or a fast Tilt Down that remains readable. The tell is horizontal streaks, or a clear building in the middle of the move.

The fix: vertical blur, planted support, sharp landing.
