Three-Shot

Narrative function

A trio has politics. Two against one, a hinge person in the middle, a late arrival who splits a pair: the triangle is the story.

If you only cover this as ping-pong singles, the audience never sees who is left out in real space. It is the wrong tool when there are four or more as a unit, or when the scene has collapsed to a pair.

It is also the wrong tool if you line three heads up with equal light and equal height and call that drama. Someone should own a peak of the triangle, or stand in the cold of it.

How it works

Arrange three bodies as a triangle in depth or across the frame, not a flat police lineup unless the story is a firing squad. Triangular Composition helps, but blocking comes first: seats, levels, who faces whom.

When to use it

Use it when a trio has politics: three gunmen, three people at a verdict, a couple plus the person who should not be there. Do not flatten them into equal portraits, and do not use a three-shot for a crowd.

Compared with similar shots

A Two-Shot is a pair; adding a third changes the grammar. A Group Shot holds a small ensemble larger than three as a relational unit.

A Master Shot may be a three-shot if the whole action is those three bodies. Do not treat three-shot as a synonym for any wide with extra extras.

In film

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the textbook trio: three men, three distances, one cemetery geometry. The standoff only works because all three remain comparable in shared frames before the eyes take over.

Prompt it

Specify who is isolated by height, light, or gap. For video, a small blocking shift (one step back) should change the politics without a cut.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a Two-Shot that crops the third, or a Group Shot with extras filling the sides. The tell is two faces and a shoulder, or a crowd.

Fix: three principals, triangular blocking, one of them slightly out.
