Narrative function

The set becomes the lighting department. A table lamp in the foreground, a TV, a diner sign: the audience believes the room because the source is in the shot.

Mixed color temperatures are a feature, not a mistake. It is the wrong tool when the fixture is only set dressing and a frontal key from nowhere does the work.

A dark lamp in frame with a face lit from camera is a lie. If the lamp is off-screen but implied, you have shifted toward motivated lighting.

How it works

Put working fixtures in frame, often brighter than a real living room so they expose on camera. Control them with bulbs, dimmers, and flags.

Hardness is whatever the shade allows: a bare bulb is hard; a cloth shade is softer. Color is mixed on purpose: tungsten 2700 to 3200K, neon magenta or cyan, screens cooler.

When to use it

Use it when the set should light the face, a night apartment, a bar, a car dash. Do not leave dead props in frame while a beauty key does the real job.

Compared with similar shots

Motivated lighting can hide units that match a source; practicals are the sources you see. Candlelight is a specific small warm practical with fast falloff.

Neon practicals are a color-and-sign subset. Available light might include existing fixtures but forbids adding them.

Window light is often a practical architecture plus sky.

The fixture is part of the composition, not only the plot.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a dummy lamp plus an off-screen key. The tell is a dark shade and a face lit from the camera.

Fix it by turning the practical up (or matching a hidden unit inside it) and killing the orphan frontal.
