Underlighting, also called uplighting, lights from below the face so shadows climb the cheekbones and the tops of the eye sockets. The modeling is the reverse of daylight and often reads as uncanny.
Narrative function
The source is fire, a screen on the floor, a flashlight under a chin, or a monster. Faces invert: the brow ridge goes dark, the nostrils and chin light up.
Horror and campfire talk use the same physics; only the object changes. It is the wrong tool for ordinary conversation under a ceiling.
A candle on a table can underlight if it sits below the chin, but candlelight is a source type that can also sit beside a face. Underlighting is the direction.
How it works
