Narrative function

The room is warm; the world is not. A hotel corridor, a Christmas party, a snowed-in hotel: 3200K lamps own the interior, and the windows go cold.

Mixed sources tell inside versus out without a caption. Safety and exposure can split across a pane of glass.

It is the wrong tool when the whole image should be honey with no cold leftover. That is Warm Amber as a grade.

It is the wrong tool if you paint opposite halves of a face teal and orange without sources to justify it. Do not treat this as a LUT named mixed lighting; it is a white-balance relationship among real lamps.

How it works

Set white balance near 3200K, or use tungsten stock. Let 5600K windows, moonlight, or cool LEDs go blue.

Keep 3200K practicals as the interior key (Practical Lighting). Gels exist to convert sources toward or away from that balance.

Colored light should hit nearby surfaces consistently. Prompt: Tungsten-balanced interior on [Subject], 3200K warmth, windows going cold blue, mixed sources telling inside versus out.

When to use it

Use it when the room is warm and the world is not: a night interior with cold windows, a party against snow. Do not use it to fake a complementary grade without sources, and do not neutralize every lamp to the same white.

Compared with similar shots

Warm Amber is an overall honey grade, not necessarily mixed. Cool Blue chills the whole frame.

Practical Lighting supplies the lamps this balance photographs. Moonlight Gel is a cool key you hang, which will go even colder if the camera is tungsten-balanced.
