Narrative function

A dark coat in a dark room disappears without an edge. Backlight draws that edge on hair, shoulders, and hat brim so the cutout reads.

In rain, dust, or smoke the same rear source can turn into volume, implying a world outside the frame: a searchlight, a high window, the sun. It is the wrong tool when you need the face, not the outline.

If you expose for the backlight, you get a silhouette. If you wrap it around to the cheek, you have started a kicker, not a true back.

How it works

Place the source behind and usually above, aimed toward camera, flagged so it does not flare unless you want veil. Hardness can be hard (sun, PAR, searchlight) for a sharp rim or softer for a glow in hair.

Color is often warmer than the key so the edge reads as sun or tungsten. Suspended particles make the beam itself photograph; without them you only see the rim on the body.

Prompt: Backlight on [Subject] from behind, rim of light tracing edges, slight veil, separation from background.

When to use it

Use it to separate a dark figure from a dark world, as in a smoky interior with one high window behind. Do not use it as the only light on a scene that still needs a face.

Compared with similar shots

Rim light is the thin highlight backlight can produce when tightly flagged. Kicker sits behind and to the side, kissing jaw or shoulder rather than wrapping the whole outline.

Silhouette exposes for the bright ground and lets the figure go black. Volumetric light needs haze so the beam, not just the rim, is visible.

Hair light is backlight aimed only at the hair.

In film

Blade Runner cuts searchlights through smoky interiors so backlight becomes architecture. The Exorcist uses a powerful house light behind Merrin as he arrives.

Days of Heaven and Blade Runner 2049 keep the sun or a hard rear source as the edge that holds a figure in a bright or dusty ground.

Prompt it

Put the source behind the body, not on the nose. " Name hair, coat edge, and whether haze is present.

Do not ask for a glowing outline sticker.

A conservator enters a dark archive where one high window sends a narrow hard shaft through suspended dust. Her body briefly interrupts the beam, producing a coherent moving shadow in the haze. Deep room, restrained atmosphere, no magical glowing particles.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a silhouette or a neon stroke. The tell is zero facial exposure, or a cartoon ring disconnected from any lamp.

Fix it by exposing a little of the key side and attaching the rim to a real rear source.
