Loop Lighting

Loop lighting creates a small nose shadow that loops toward the corner of the mouth and does not connect to the cheek shadow. The key sits slightly off axis and a little high, a middle step between butterfly and Rembrandt.

Narrative function

The face is shaped but still friendly: interviews, earnest close-ups, people we are supposed to trust. You get a hint of cheek shadow and a definite nose, without the painterly triangle or the glamour butterfly.

It is the wrong tool when you need a mask of light and dark, or a fashion-symmetric face. If that loop grows until it joins the cheek, you have crossed into Rembrandt.

If you center the key, you are back at butterfly.

How it works

Offset the key about 30 to 45 degrees from the nose, slightly above eye line, softness medium so the loop is a clean comma, not a smear. Fill can sit opposite at a gentle ratio (2:1 to 4:1).

Color is usually the room: window daylight or soft tungsten. The shadow-side cheek still receives some light; that is the difference from Rembrandt.

Prompt: Loop lighting on [Subject], key slightly off-axis, a small loop shadow from the nose toward the corner of the mouth.

When to use it

Use it for a natural portrait that is still shaped, an interview, a two-shot that should not look lit. Do not use it when you want a cheek triangle or a half-face cut.

Compared with similar shots

Rembrandt lighting connects nose shadow to cheek shadow and leaves a triangle. Butterfly lighting is on axis with a philtrum butterfly.

Split lighting goes to 90 degrees and drops the far cheek. Bounce will wrap the loop away if the source gets too large.

Motivated lighting may produce a loop from a slightly off window, but the pattern is the geometry, not the justification.

In film

Interview cinematography and news-adjacent films such as Frost/Nixon live on loop because both eyes stay open and the face still has a side. The Social Network's talking-head grammar often sits here: slightly off keys, not painterly triangles.

Prompt it

Name the loop and forbid the triangle. Use: "Loop lighting on [Subject], key slightly off-axis, a small loop shadow from the nose toward the corner of the mouth." Add that the loop does not touch the cheek shadow.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is Rembrandt or butterfly. The tell is a connected cheek triangle, or a perfectly centered under-nose butterfly.

Fix it by offsetting the key a little and stopping before the shadows merge.

Questions

What is loop lighting in film?

A slightly off-axis key that throws a small loop-shaped nose shadow toward the mouth corner. That shadow does not join the cheek shadow.

Loop lighting vs Rembrandt lighting

Loop leaves a gap between nose shadow and cheek shadow. Rembrandt joins them, creating a triangle of light on the far cheek.

When should I use loop lighting?

Use it for a natural, still-shaped portrait or interview. Skip it when you want glamour symmetry or a dramatic cheek triangle.

How do I prompt loop lighting for AI image or video?

Put the key slightly off axis. Specify a small loop shadow from the nose toward the mouth that does not connect to the cheek shadow.
