Fisheye

Curvilinear ultra-wide view

A fisheye in fisheye cinematography is a very wide curvilinear projection that bends straight lines, especially away from the center. The world wraps around the lens; architecture becomes a bowl rather than a rectilinear box.

Fisheye frames over time

Narrative function

Put a face in the middle and the room circles them. Put them off-center and their skull stretches along the barrel.

The mapping can be circular (a round image in a black frame) or diagonal (the circle fills the rectangle). Either way, the mind of the shot is warped, or the space is a dome.

It is the wrong tool when you wanted extreme width with straight walls. That is a rectilinear 14mm Ultra-Wide.

Random wobbly architecture is a model failure, not fisheye projection. If the beat is only a mildly wide room, 24mm Wide already does it without the wrap.

How it works

Choose circular or full-frame fisheye and stage faces near the center unless edge stretching is deliberate. Keep the distortion systematic: lines bow around a stable center, they do not ripple.

A zenith or dome shot will map the room as a globe. Prompt: Fisheye on [Subject], circular or extreme barrel distortion, a world wrapping around a face, subjective unreality.

When to use it

Use it when the mind is warped, or the space is a dome: a palace that should feel wrong, a subjective spiral, a helmet-cam joke. Do not use it as a synonym for 14mm, and do not apply random warping.

Compared with similar shots

14mm Ultra-Wide is rectilinear: huge field, straight-ish lines, stretch from a close stand. Fisheye is curvilinear by design.

24mm Wide is moderate and polite. Kaleidoscope multiplies fragments; fisheye is one continuous wrap.

In film

The Favourite bends palace interiors under conspicuously wide, curvilinear views. Poor Things uses highly distorted wide-angle views so the world stays unfamiliar.

A Clockwork Orange and Being John Malkovich have used extreme wide wrap as subjective pressure. Grammar of bowing space, not a filter preset.

Prompt it

Name the projection. Fisheye on [Subject], circular or extreme barrel distortion, a world wrapping around a face, subjective unreality.

Say whether the image is a circle or fills the frame, and keep the face near center unless stretch is the point. Do not write 14mm rectilinear, and do not ask for random wobble.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is 14mm Ultra-Wide with extra warp, or a wavy hallucination. The tell is straight walls that should bow, or unstable rippling.

Fix: systematic barrel around a clear center, horizon curved, face protected unless you mean the stretch.

Questions

What is fisheye in film?

It is a curvilinear ultra-wide projection that bends straight lines away from the center. The field wraps around the lens instead of drawing a rectilinear box.

Fisheye vs 14mm Ultra-Wide

A 14mm rectilinear ultra-wide keeps lines mostly straight and exaggerates size from a close stand. A fisheye bows those lines on purpose. Width is not the same as wrap.

When should I use fisheye?

Use it when unreality, comedy, or a dome of space is the point. Skip it for ordinary wides and for rectilinear 14mm intrusion.

How do I prompt fisheye for AI image or video?

Write: Fisheye on [Subject], circular or extreme barrel distortion, a world wrapping around a face, subjective unreality. Specify circular versus full-frame fill. Forbid random wobble and rectilinear 14mm.
