Infrared
Infrared cinematography photographs near-infrared reflectance (roughly 700 to 900 nm), not heat, so foliage often goes pale, skies go dark, and skin can look waxy. It is a different slice of reflected light, still a photograph of the location.
Narrative function
The woods are white. The sky is near black.
Faces are wrong in a quiet way: veins, powder, fabric dyes all rewrite. The place is still Earth.
The spectrum is not the one the eye owns. Use it when a landscape should feel like another planet without leaving the location: a forbidden forest, a concert IR look, a surveillance still that is not green-tube night vision.
It is the wrong tool for hunting in total dark (that is image intensification) or for seeing body heat (that is thermal). If the image is green and noisy with blooming lamps, you have night vision.
If faces are ironbow masks, you have thermal.
How it works
Use an IR-pass filter and a sensor or stock sensitive to near-IR, or remove a camera's IR-cut filter. Light is still reflected sunlight or IR-rich tungsten, not emitted heat.

Compared with similar shots
Night Vision intensifies residual photons onto a phosphor, usually green and grainy, as a hunting or surveillance eye. Thermal maps emitted long-wave radiation to a false-color palette.
Monochrome is visible-light black and white. Infrared can be printed mono, but its tonalities (white leaves, black sky) come from IR reflectance.
In film
The Village used infrared film in the woods so the forest would read as another world while remaining a photographed place. Concert IR photography is the live-music cousin: pale skin, dark clothing dyes, no green tube.
