Night Vision

Night vision in night vision cinematography is image intensification: residual photons, and often a near-IR illuminator, amplified through a photocathode and microchannel plate onto a phosphor. The picture is typically green, grainy, blooming around lamps, with the framing of goggles, a weapon sight, or a camera in the dark.

Narrative function

Someone is hunting or hiding. The world is a tube.

Speculars bloom. Resolution is poor.

Grain is the gain. You are not looking at a graded night exterior.

You are looking through a device that makes the dark usable. Use it as a point of view: a raid, a found camera, a basement with goggles on.

The green (or white phosphor) is the display, not a color grade on a normal sensor. It is the wrong tool for a moonlit scene, for pale IR woods, or for heat outlines.

If trees go white and skies black in clean daylight contrast, that is infrared photography. If bodies are warm masks against cold walls, that is thermal.
