Narrative function

As a picture machine, design a motion whose end state matches its start: position, light, pose. The cut should vanish.

As a story machine, repeat an event sequence while knowledge or one decision changes. Those are cousins that share a name.

Do not prompt them as one blob. It is the wrong tool for a forward-back toy (boomerang) or a mostly still image with one living detail (cinemagraph).

A loop that changes everything at once has no baseline. A join that flashes is just a cut.

How it works

For a visual loop, match the first and last frames and keep the action forward. For a narrative loop, establish a reset cue and a stable baseline, then vary a small number of actions per cycle.

Prompt: Infinite loop of [Subject], the last frame sewing to the first, a motion that never arrives.

When to use it

Use it when a motion or a day should fail to conclude, such as a walk cycle that sews or a morning that resets. Do not use it when you want a boomerang snap.

Compared with similar shots

An infinite loop is not a Boomerang, which rewinds the same samples. A Cinemagraph holds a still and loops one island of motion.

Reverse Motion is direction, not a sew. Narrative loops (Groundhog Day) change behavior inside a repeated event.

Visual loops must match ends.

GIF culture and installation video are the visual grammar: a motion that can play forever. Groundhog Day returns the same morning while Phil's behavior changes.

Prompt it

Say whether you want a seamless visual sew or a repeated-day story. Still: a pose that could be both start and end.

Design three repetitions of a commuter’s morning: the same alarm, dropped coin and departing bus. In each cycle she changes one decision, producing a different encounter. Reuse matched camera positions and reset sounds. Generate the baseline once, then controlled variations with stable people and geography.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is Boomerang. The tell is a visible rewind, or a reset with no matching frames.

Fix: match last frame to first, keep direction consistent, and change only the variables you mean to change.
