Narrative function

Day interiors without looking lit. A figure sits in the falloff, one side toward glass, the far wall dying.

Painterly rooms, period houses, and quiet dramas use the window as the only key so the hour is readable. It is the wrong tool at night (unless moonlight through glass is the story), or when you need a hard bulb.

A window is not automatically bounce; bounce happens after the light hits a wall. A window can be hard if the sun is direct and small in the frame of the glass.

How it works

Use real sky or a large source outside the glass, plus sheers if you want wrap. Direction is the window's side.

Hardness: overcast or north light is soft; direct sun through dirty glass is harder and may throw a patch. Color is daylight, cooler if north sky, warmer late.

When to use it

Use it for a day interior that should not look studio-lit, a sitting room, a workshop. Do not use a frontal silk that ignores the window's actual wall.

Compared with similar shots

Soft light is the usual quality of north windows. Motivated lighting is the logic that lets you hide a source outside that window.

Bounce is the wall ricochet after entry. Available light uses the real window without adding.

In film

Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) builds interiors as if Vermeer's window were the key. The Danish Girl uses large directional day interiors with falloff.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a frontal soft key that does not match the window wall, or a hard gobo of blinds when you asked for wrap. The tell is a key from a blank wall.

Fix it by putting the bright side on the glass and letting the room fall off.
