Whip Pan

Narrative function

The move is a transition, a punchline, or a sudden shift of attention. Energy transfers between spaces that may not even be adjacent.

An ordinary change of location can feel like a comic snap if the blur matches. It is the wrong tool for a readable pan across a mural, and the wrong tool if you need to see the travel.

If the landing is not sharp, the whip is only a smear.

How it works

Match blur direction, luminance, duration, and acceleration if you cut inside the blur. Design the sharp landing before generating the two sides.

Opposite pan directions or mismatched brightness expose the seam. Prompt a violent whip pan off the subject, horizontal motion blur streaking the world, then a snap resolve on the next beat.

When to use it

Use it as a transition, punchline, or sudden attention shift. Concrete beat: a look off, a blur, a new room already in progress.

Do not whip across information the audience must read.

Compared with similar shots

A Pan Left or Pan Right stays readable. A Whip Tilt is the same idea on the pitch axis.

A Crash Zoom In blurs radially by changing focal length, not by yaw. Whip pan is horizontal speed past recognition, then a hard stop.

Prompt it

Violent whip pan off [Subject], horizontal motion blur streaking the world into ribbons, then a snap resolve on the next beat. For motion: extremely fast whip pan away from [Subject], heavy horizontal motion blur, then a sharp stop.

Generate A: a baker turns toward a ringing telephone and the camera whip-pans right into horizontal blur. Generate B: begin with the same rightward blur and land on a flour-covered delivery driver outside. Join at maximum blur. Keep motion direction and brightness compatible; no dissolve.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a fast Pan Right that never blurs, or a Crash Zoom In. The tell is readable detail in the middle, radial zoom blur, or a seam where blur directions disagree.

The fix: commit to unreadability in the middle, match the join, stop sharp.
