Low-key lighting, or low key lighting, uses high contrast, selective illumination, and substantial shadow so most of the frame can sit near black. One pool of light is often enough; the dark is designed, not an accident of underexposure.
Narrative function
Mystery, crime, and moral night live here because the audience cannot see the whole room. A face, a gun, a doorway gets the pool; the rest is withheld.
The ratio is the story: who is visible, who is not. It is the wrong tool for comedy timing that needs both eyes, or for a location you must geography-read.
Diming a fully lit office until it is muddy is not low-key. That is just a dark even room.
How it works
