Tableau

Narrative function

Hold the arrangement and the audience reads at their own speed: who stands where, who fails to move, who sneaks a gesture. Stillness makes a tiny action loud.

Comedy, ceremony, and dread all use that delay. It is the wrong tool when the scene needs chase geography or a close-up of a lie.

If you cut the tableau to pieces immediately, you shot a master and threw it away. If the arrangement has no readable relationships, you shot decoration.

Tableau is not automatically centered, but it likes a designed field. Dirty edges can still apply if the living picture is glimpsed from a door.

How it works

Block silhouettes, spacing, and sightlines before adding motion. Rehearse separate timings inside the shared frame.

Use enough depth of field that the intended points stay readable. A locked tripod is the default.

A slow creep is a different sentence. Prompt: Tableau of [Subject], arranged bodies, a living painting, duration instead of coverage.

When to use it

Use it for ritual, comic ensembles, processions, and any beat that should be discovered rather than prescribed by cutting. Do not hold a well-dressed but empty arrangement.

Compared with similar shots

Static Locked-Off is the camera lock. Tableau is the staged picture that uses that lock.

Centered Composition is a common altar for it, not a requirement. Group Shot is a size.

Tableau is duration plus arrangement. Triangular Composition may be the geometry inside the hold.

Long Take may travel. A tableau usually stays and lets time do the move.

In film

Barry Lyndon holds painterly courts until a glance is an event. Roy Andersson's films park ensembles in still rooms so a small failure is comic and awful.

PlayTime distributes gags across broad, held compositions. The Color of Pomegranates arranges people and objects as ritual friezes.

Prompt it

Ask for arrangement and a hold. Tableau of [Subject], arranged bodies, a living painting, duration instead of coverage.

Name positions (left standing, center seated, right in a doorway) and say camera locked off. For video, add little motion except a planned gesture, no coverage cuts.

Locked wide frontal shot of five museum attendants preparing a display. Each performs a different small task; one repeatedly moves an object that another immediately returns. Clear spacing, readable full-body gestures, dry visual humor, no close-ups or camera motion.

What usually goes wrong

The usual wrong cousin is a Master Shot you plan to chop, or a pretty still with no relationships. The tell is a posed group that exists to be pretty, then a cut to close-ups that do all the work.

The fix is to give each body a job and to let the hold be the coverage.
